Blog Giveaway Day 2 - Sew Bunting by Debbie Shore

Here we have our second book in this weeks Blog Giveaway:

Sew Bunting
Simple and stunning garlands to style your home

ISBN 978-1-84448-949-7
Price £9.99

Bunting has made its way into the nations collective consciousness and is a pretty way to decorate a room.  Using fabric for bunting increases its longevity and flexibility because you can piece different fabrics together and create pockets, layers, folds and pleats with ease.

Felt Bunting
Debbie Shore here gives a new twist to traditional bunting.  There are 29 projects to do and the basic tools you will need are a rotary cutter, mat and quilting ruler.  There are useful tips at the beginning about how to approach making your bunting, for example not to add too many embellishments which might make your bunting too heavy.

Starting with a simple design of bunting is a good introduction to the techniques that will follow and give you a good basic knowledge of how to approach this technique.  You move onto Advent Bunting, Applique Bunting (a die-cutting machine will come in handy here and you will be able to adapt your designs to shapes you would like to have in your bunting).

Blackboard Bunting
There are some interesting patterns here which are quite original.  Blackboard paint is used to create black bunting triangles which can be drawn on with chalk to customise the design, and you can use children’s designs to cut out bunting pieces and put together.  There are themed pieces, such as Halloween and Wedding bunting, and the projects are also made interesting by different scales, so that you get mini decorations for lampshades and tote bags.

There is a good range of designs and shapes and some creativity in its approach, given that there are some patterns given where you would create the design and print onto fabric sheets to make up.  There is enough variety to make it a worthy subject of a whole book, and Debbie Shore creates very user-friendly patterns and themes in her latest book.  Again, these patterns would be good for children and those with basic sewing skills but there are enough ideas included for someone more experience to take the initiative and move forward with what is started here.
